Charles has lectured internationally and served on the faculties of the University of Virginia and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses that integrated the principles of logotherapy. He has earned an educational Diplomate from—and is currently on the faculty of—the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy (US).

He is the founder and president of Purpose Research, which seeks to incorporate meaning and purpose into the research, theory, and practice of the helping professions. His focus is on the uniquely human and spiritual dimensions of the person in considering the whole human being. He has edited and/or published numerous books on logotherapy by authors such as Joseph Fabry, Elisabeth Lukas, Paul Wong, Ann Graber, and Geri Marr Burdman.

As a National Board Certified Counselor (US), he volunteered for five years at a regional crisis center (part of the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), where he developed a logotherapeutic in-service training module.

His research examines what theories and statistical methods miss when they set aside the uniquely human dimension and the ethical consequences that follow. He has served as a reviewer for eight academic journals, and his work has appeared in journals of medicine, psychology, education, and business.
